History of Little Sable Point Lighthouse

Located in Oceana County, the Little Sable Point Lighthouse was built in 1874 and once looked very similar to the Big Sable Point Lighthouse near Ludington. Both towers stood 107 feet tall, both were constructed of brick, and both had a third-order Fresnel lens (a lens named after its inventor which focuses the rays into a horizontal beam for much more efficiency than a reflector system). The Big Sable Point tower deteriorated and eventually was covered with steel plates, but the tower at Little Sable Point still looks much as it did 120 years ago.

  1. Very interesting. Next time we're there, let's tour the light house.
